Timetable - October 30, 1960

Truly a sign of the times - this is the first timetable in this collection which depicts the timetable as 'Bus and Passenger Train' - not the other way around. In September of 1960, the Maine Central Railroad stopped all passenger service and closed Union Station in Bangor. More than any other single event, this killed passenger rail service in the State of Maine. Your editor did a video on the subject for a college class. The Bangor and Aroostook could get you as far as Northern Maine Junction in Hermon. If you were headed to Boston or Portland from there, a bus was your next best option. In fact if you were holding a thru ticket, they would bus you from Northern Maine Junction to the Bangor bus depot, without charge. Why not just get on the bus and ride it all the way to Boston or Portland and skip the train entirely?
Less than a year from when this timetable went into effect, the Bangor and Aroostook would cease all passenger train operations. This timetable is truly the beginning of the end.
