Timetable - June 24, 1912

"The problem of producing a self-propelled car for railroad service has at last been solved by the Bangor & Aroostook Railroad Gasoline-Electric Car with its freedom from cinders, dust and odors, and luxurious accommodations and reliability."
For the first time an internal combustion engine will be used to haul passengers on the Bangor and Aroostook!  This single page from this timetable has been color corrected and enhanced below for easier reading. Although it is not stated anywhere within the timetable, one presumes the two cars referenced below would be placed into service on the lines in Aroostook County which had either shorter runs or lower passenger counts in order to make the service cheaper for the railroad to operate. On page 43 of Bangor and Aroostook: The Maine Railroad (Angier-Cleaves, 1986) there is a mention of only one car being leased in the Fall of 1911. No picture was placed in the book and it would seem that these cars were considered only a minor part of the B&A's history. It does show the railroad's willingness to try new things and that spirit of innovation would survive for decades.
Interestingly, we see Traveler's Cheques being promoted by the American Express Company in this timetable - keeping in mind of course that American Express was once just that - an express company - moving packages around the country. That ended in July 1918, when American Railway Express Agency was formed. They would later drop the American and be known as Railway Express Agency. American Express today is associated with credit cards but they only launched those on October 1, 1958.
