Timetable - Freight Train Schedule - November 1, 1950
Freight traffic is what makes most railroads their money. As a result, this publication, aimed at shippers was designed to both inform and promote B&A freight trains. These schedules allow one to really study the traffic patterns. Interestingly in this schedule, everything above Oakfield gathers into Oakfield and is run on one of four ON 28s (operated according to traffic volume). ON-28 runs straight through to Northern Maine Junction. A separate OM-42 runs from Oakfield to Millinocket and MN-56 runs from Millinocket to Northern Maine Junction, via Brownville Junction and this train handles interchange with CP at Brownville Junction. One could then, with this schedule, have five trains run into Northern Maine Junction from the North in a single 24 hour period. Add in a Northbound from Searsport and of course all the Maine Central traffic and Northern Maine Junction was a busy place in 1950. That does not include all the passenger trains either!
