Timetable - April 24, 1960
A red color scheme grabs the eye for this timetable. It would seem that some changes have been made in the last two months since the last 1960 timetable in this collection. A connection for Northbound service is now being listed - directly from the Maine Central at Northern Maine Junction. The only problem is - they will drop you there at 12:26 PM. The next train Northbound will leave at 1:15 AM. No idea what one would do at Northern Maine Junction in 1960 for nearly 11 hours. This is not a practical connection. Slightly better is the Southbound, where one will arrive at Northern Maine Junction at 9:30 PM, get a free bus ride to Bangor, arriving at Bangor Union Station at 10:00 PM and only have to pass five hours at the station before the 3:05 AM train leaves for Portland. Neither is what one would call a 'close connection'.
No service reductions between February and April, but, dining car service has finally seen the reality of increasing costs and declining use. Now only the Southbound train has a box lunch service - you may order from station agents at Caribou and Presque Isle or from the conductor and your box lunch will be delivered at Houlton. On the Bus side of things service is being reworked to fit ridership and the buses are now the only way to get North of Caribou.
