Last Run - B&A Bus - January 21, 1984

For 93 years the Bangor and Aroostook Railroad carried passengers in one form or another. in 1936 buses came along, trying to boost service and reduce costs on marginal runs in the midst of the Great Depression. The buses operated first to supplement the trains, then in parallel and eventually one could argue offered better service than the trains did. Nothing lasts forever and ridership on the B&A buses dwindled to the point where on January 21, 1984, the last bus ran. Perhaps a sign of the level of interest very little attention seemed to be focused on the event. To be fair, the route was picked up by Cyr bus so although the name on the bus changed, travel by bus to Northern Maine was still possible. Nonetheless, the Winter 1984 Maine Line Magazine had the following three page feature on the subject. The entire issue is available on the Archives elsewhere on this site.
